You can find out online if it has a code or not, if it's a whim purchase you could ask someone in the shop if it's game or wherever they would probably know.
Assume that if it has a code then buying it pre-owed will mean it has been used. For a lot of games it was only for the online bits anyway but some are locking out single player bits now ~(rage and arkham city have)
If in doubt, buy new as most games drop in price quickly anyway.
