this is a question for any1 that owns a 40Gb ps3, the other day i upgraded my friends HDD on his 60GB ps3 and when i turn it on the fan revved up quite quickly and high for about 2seconds then it stopped and then when i had done it him he said i could play on a game that he had left in so i did and the fan remained at a slow speed for ages at least 30mins b4 it started to get higher and the heat started to come through at the back.
now that got me thinking with my 40GB ps3 cus when i turn mine on my fan slowly spins for 2seconds and not high either and then goes back down to quiet and then when im playing games after 10mins the fan kicks in fastish and high, is that normal and not a sign of it on its way out because i cant remember how the fan went from new wen i got it.
or is it just that the 60GB model is always sharper on the fan on start up and has a better cooling system ? and that the 40GB dunt need a sharp spin of the fan?

my current 60GB spins up to its top setting for about 2 seconds on switch on then goes back to quiet. after sitting in XMB for 10 - 15 mins it will spin to level 2. after about 30 mins it goes back to level 1 or quiet.
when playing games it always spins up to level 2 after 10 mins and to level 3 after about 30 mins and tends to stay there till im finished.
with Bluray playback it tends start off quiet at level and and the throttles up to level 2 after about 15 mins then stays there till the movie is finished or if its a long movie (over 100 mins) it sometimes goes back to level 1.
i think the PS3 system has 4 levels of fan speed which is what it spins at on start up because does hit level 3 when playing games but its not as loud and agressive as the 2 seconds when i switch it on. another thing i try to do is to let the PS3 cool down after gaming by leaving it stand in the XMB for 5 or 10 mins after gaming that way the majority of the heat built up when gaming has usually gone and the system throttles back to level 1.
the new HDD can effect the internal temprature especially if you install a 7200 RPM drive as the PS3 was built to take a 5400RPM drive which dont kick out so much heat.
