Go into system info on the PS3 , it will tell you the drive size.

Re: What model is my PS3?

Ok well lets start numbing down the numbers.

1, How many USB ports dose your PS3 have? If it is 4 then if its a 60gb model if 2 its a 40gb,80gb,120gb.

2, If it is not a 60gb follow this step. Now have a look where the hard drive is fitted. If the hard drive caddy looks like this:

Then its a 40gb. If the caddy looks like this:

Then it is a 80gb or a 120gb.

[ Edited ]

The easiest way is to take down the model number of your PS3 (should be located near the serial number - on the bottom or side - I forget where exactly) then Google it.

The model numbers all start with "CECH...."   Mine is CECHC60 which make mine an original 60gigabyter in the European market.

Doing this should lead you to the Wikipaedia entry for the PS3 where all the model numbers are listed in a Model Comparison Table a little way down the page and you can simply look your model up and find out a shed load about it.

Yeah this would probably be slightly easier than cracking the machine open.

Re: What model is my PS3?

I only told him about the hard drive caddy thing because am guessing he bought it pre owned. If he did there is a big chance the previous owner could of had a 40gb but upgraded to hard drive to a 80gb and sold it as a 80gb if you know what i mean.

Indeed.  I subsequently upgraded my 60 gig HDD with a 650 gig Scorpion Blue.
