Here's what I like in games-
Love customization and a good bit of Sci-Fi and tech, liked MW2 and Goldeneye007 (those are only shooters I have). Love a good, fair, and relatively newb-friendly (but n00b-free) community, and I don't care about haxors. So should I get MAG? Saw collectors edition for $50. Plz make up my mind, too lazy to do it mahself.
Those links in my signature are sooooooo good. Seriously, type up ALL the web adresses. ALL OF THEM.

I'm a huge fan of MAG, but to tell you the honest truth...

...is not MAG.
Newb-friendly - Starting out in MAG is an exceptionally hard thing to do. The tutorial is fairly useless, so you may need to find a friend before playing the confusing bigger game modes and whatnot.
Fair - MAGs factions are imbalanced. This is an issue Zipper appears to still be working on. But it is hard to play on Valor or Raven right now.
N00b-free - Er... Sadly, no. Half the players, (In fact, I'd say, perhaps even more than half of the playerbase is clueless. I mean, if I remember correctly, only about 20% of the playerbase has a KDR above 1.00, and most of the players you'll encounter are a bit... Well... Lost. But I do believe this is a the case for randoms in any game.
MAG is great fun, it definately has the customisation and sci-fi bit, but if you want to really get into MAG, you do need to stick out the rough patch at first. That might end after maybe... 30/40 hours worth of your time, and a good 40/50 level ups.
But I guess, again, that's the case in any MMO.

I also think you're a bit late to the party. I'm not sure if i'd buy it now if I were you.
Well, I was thinking of getting it for my birthday-early March-, since that's almost the only time i'm able to get new games, but i'm not really concerned about the newer FPS's (or third persons, i.e. Dead Space 2). Hopefully I won't be too behind in the action by then, and maybe if i'm lucky the faction will be a little more balanced.

If you shop around you should pick MAG up cheap enough have a look on E-Bay theres plenty on there ....
As the others said this is not "noob" friendly just be prepared for the Grim Reaper to visit time & time again as you start your journey through MAG...

I would definitely give it a go, probably best to get it as cheap as you can as player numbers aren't as high as they used to be, might have improved since I last logged on. It;s one of the best FPS i have played, just find yourself a decent clan or some people that like to use team work and you should enjoy it a lot.
